Webinar Invitation: Covid-19 and the private rental sector

by | Apr 8, 2021 | Events

The UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice with the UCD Equality Studies Centre are holding a webinar entitled Covid-19 and the private rental sector: an international qualitative research seminar on Friday April 16th, 8 to 10am CET.

This webinar is organized by Dr. Michael Byrne in collaboration with the Equality Studies Centre and the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, UCD.

Webinar Theme

The webinar is organized in the context of Covid-19 with a focus on its impact and associated public health measures on tenants in the private rental sector which has been of concern from the outset of the pandemic. In many countries, tenants are concentrated in sectors of employment most acutely affected by the pandemic, and confront challenges of high rents and insecurity of tenure. Emergency measures, including eviction bans and rent freezes, have been introduced in a number of countries. However, over the coming months and years policy makers will continue to confront challenges, including the potential for significant rent arrears, and consequently debt and eviction. This seminar brings together experts on the private rental sector in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, with a particular focus on qualitative research. It aims to showcase the latest research on the impact of the pandemic on the private rental sector, policy responses to that impact and how we can confront emerging challenges.

The Speakers

The Webinar will include the following speakers:

  1. Bronwyn Bate (Western Sydney University): The everyday practices and experiences of renting within the private rental sector in Australia
  2. Dr Bridgette Toy-Cronin & Sarah Bierre (University of Otago | Te Whare Wānanga o Otāgo, New Zealand): Power, compliance and eviction: rent arrears hearings in a tribunal system
  3. Dr Adriana Mihaela Soaita (University of Glasgow): For a post-Covid world: private tenants demand the right to home

To draw attention to an emerging private rental housing market, the project titled “Understanding tenants and landlords in Romania”, ethically approved by the University of Bucharest, invited the public to reflect on the idea of the ‘Ideal Tenant’. I warmly thank the 18 contributors (homeowners, tenants and landlords) as speaking publicly is an act of courage.
